Ganesha Chaturthi is a beloved festival celebrated all over India and by Hindus everywhere specially in Maharastra. Today marks the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the god known for helping remove obstacles and bringing new beginnings. Families and groups come together to celebrate Lord Ganesha in their homes and hearts, bringing joy, devotion, and a sense of unity to the holiday.

Each year, people celebrate his birthday with a 10-day event. During this holiday, they do four main things: they bring him to life, they honor him with 16 different offerings, they honor him again, and then they take him back home.


 

Ganesha Chaturthi Puja Vidhi and Rituals

Ganesha Chaturthi is an event that honors Lord Ganesha, who helps remove hurdles. During this event, people pray to Ganesha with a lot of respect.

Shodashopachara puja is a special type of puja that involves 16 steps. From reciting prayers Puranas to performing various activities. You can say this prayer at any time but the afternoon is the best. 
   

Here are the main steps of Ganesha Puja:

Deep-Prajawalan: Lighting a lamp.
Sankalpa: Making a vow.
Avahana: Inviting Ganesha.
Pratishthapan: Installing the idol.
Asana: Offering a seat.
Padya: Washing the feet.
Arghya: Offering water.
Achamanam: Offering a drink.
Sankha: Blowing a conch shell.
Puष्पाञ्जलि: Offering flowers.
Dhoop: Offering incense.
Deepa: Offering a lamp.
Naivedya: Offering food.
Tamboola: Offering betel leaf and nut.
Nirmalya: Removing the offerings.
Namaskar: Saluting Ganesha.


Note: If you already have a Ganesha idol at home, you don't need to do Avahana and Pratishthapan. Instead, you do Utthapana at the end of the puja.

On Ganesha Chaturthi, people also perform Eka Vinshati Name Ganesh Puja (chanting 19 names of Ganesha) and Ganesha Anga Puja (worshiping each part of Ganesha's body)


Puja Samagri (Puja Items) Arrangement

For Ganesh Chaturthi, people who worship Lord Ganesha need things like ghee (butter), a little lamp, flowers, colorful rice, red powder, a red cloth, sweet treats (like Modak), fruits, water from the Ganges River, a special drink made with five ingredients, cardamom, cloves, a coconut, and betel nut.
