One of the most attractive and magical components of the Hindu ritual is the Bells. The ring of the bell is not only a ringing sound, but there is a divine vibration that links us with the god-like power. Bells are mainly used in worship, in a huge temple or a small home temple.

Have you ever felt that when a bell rings, the atmosphere becomes calm and pure? The reason is that the sound takes away all bad vibes and fills the environment with positive energy. Let’s dive deeper into why bells are so special in pooja and how they benefit us spiritually and scientifically.

Ring Bells in Hindu Tradition

In Hinduism, bells are considered a sign of well-being. You will commonly cross them at the entrance to temples, as well as at home altars. During pooja, aarati, and yajna, among other rituals, it is ringed by the priests (pujari).

Bells were also used in ancient times. Since temples didn’t have doors, priests(pujari) would ring bells to signal the end of worship or to tell devotees that it was time for the god to rest. Bells were also found to be used to calculate time, too, in certain traditions.

However, more than the above practices, there is a spiritual and scientific power of a bell.

Spiritual Meaning of Ringing Bells

The sound of a bell is of great spiritual significance:

  • It is removed to take out the evil or bad energies.
  • Sound leads us to focus completely on God
  • It is also said that a bell takes seven seconds to vibrate and connect to the seven chakras in the body. This provides a balance and peace of energy.
  • In holy books such as the Skanda Purana, talk of how the bell may be rung as being able to cleanse a person of his or her sins.

Each section of a bell is symbolic:

  • The body is the symbol of Ananta (time).
  • The tongue of the bell is connected to Goddess Saraswati (wisdom and knowledge).
  • The handle is the symbolism of Prana Shakti (life force).

Every time, therefore, we ring a bell, we awaken the divine presence around us and in us.

The importance of ringing a bell is described in the ancient scriptures of Agama Shastra, which says:

Aagamaarthamtu devaanaam
gamanaarthamtu rakshasaam
Kurve ghantaaravam tatra
devataahvaahna lakshanam”

The meaning of this verse is – When I ring this bell, it is to invite the presence of Gods and Goddesses, so that divine and positive energies enter my home and heart, while the negative and evil forces within me are driven away.

According to the Skanda Purana, ringing a temple bell can wash away the sins a person has committed not only in this life but also in past lives.

Types of bells

Hindu rituals have mainly three types of bells:

  • Garuda Bell - The Garuda bell is very small and can be held in single hand during pooja or aarati.

  • Handbell: Generally flat and is played using a wooden stick.

  • Ghanta – large bells that are hung on the temples and can be heard over a long distance.

All of these have various vibrations but the same aim of forming positive energy.

The metals used in Bells

The choice of metal to use in making the temple bells is not casual. In fact, it is made with the use of special metals such as copper, silver, brass, gold, and iron

These metals signify the Pancha Mahabhuta (five elements: earth, water, fire, air, and space).

The balanced mix of these results in a religious sound of “Om” - the sound of the universe. That is why the ring of a temple bell is so divine and pure.
