What is Ganesh Chaturthi, and why do we celebrate it?

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated in honour of the birthday of the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, namely, Lord Ganesha.

Lord Ganesha, i.e., Vighnaharta, is the one who removes obstacles, and the one who provides wisdom, i.e., Budhhidata. The people believe that anything worked upon or even any puja done without the blessings of Ganesh is not a success.

This festival is also a symbol of harmony, dedication, and celebration in every family.

The Divine Birth of Lord Ganesha

The history of Ganesha's birth is very special:

The story of Lord Ganesha’s birth is one of the most heart-touching. Goddess Parvati wanted someone to guard her while she rested, so she created a little boy from the sandalwood paste from her body. She formed a young boy and gave him life to guard her while she bathed. This boy was none other than Ganesha.

When Lord Shiva returned and tried to enter, Ganesha, not knowing who he was, stopped him because he was just following his mother's order. Lord Shiva became enraged and fought with the boy, and in the heat of the moment, he cut off Ganesha’s head. Seeing this, Goddess Parvati was heartbroken and demanded her son back.

To console her, Lord Shiva ordered his followers to bring the head of the first living being they found facing north. They got back the head of an elephant. Lord Shiva placed it on the boy’s body and blessed him with life again. From that day, Ganesha was known as the God of Wisdom, Prosperity, and Remover of Obstacles.

This divine story is the reason why devotees celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi with such love and devotion.
