Dussehra in India: Mythological History & Legend

The legend surrounding Dussehra is just as interesting as the festival itself.

  1. The greatest legend is that of the epic Ramayana. On this day, Lord Rama, assisted by Hanuman and his army, overpowered Ravana, the ten-headed demon king of Lanka. It is the end of the darkness and the rise of religion.

  2. There is one more story related to Dussehra and Goddess Durga. When Maa Durga finally killed the demon, Mahishasura, after nine days of fighting with him (Navratri), on the tenth day, which is the day we mark as Vijayadashami. That is why the day is also linked with Shakti (divine feminine power).

  3. According to the Mahabharata, after 13 years of exile, the Pandavas re-emerged on Vijayadashami. Before going to war, they brought out their weapons, which were hidden in a Shami tree, and paid tribute to them. Ever since this time, worshipping tools and weapons on Dussehra has become a tradition in several regions of India.

Dussehra in India: Astrological Significance

Dussehra is not only a myth, but it is also linked with astrology. It occurs on Dashami Tithi of the bright half of the Ashwin month. And the very word Dashami is believed to be very auspicious.

Astrology claims that this day is full of positive universal energy and also the best day to start new projects, purchase new homes, or start significant projects. It is believed that by worshiping the Shami tree on Dussehra, one is guaranteed wealth and victory since the tree is sacred in both the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.

The astrological signs of this cycle are deemed to be good to get things out of the way and bring luck. This is why Dussehra is regarded by many people as the best moment to get rid of negative things and make destiny come their way.
