“O Lord Krishna! I offer my obeisance to You. You have graciously described to me the significance of Kamada Ekadashi, which falls in the Shukla Paksha (bright half) of the month of Chaitra. Now, kindly tell me the name, procedure, and significance of the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha (dark half) of the month of Vaishakha.”
Lord Shri Krishna replied:
“O King of Kings! The Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Vaishakha is known as Varuthini Ekadashi. It bestows good fortune, destroys all sins, and ultimately grants liberation. Let me tell you the sacred story associated with this Ekadashi.”
In ancient times, there was a righteous king named Mandhata, who ruled near the banks of the sacred river Narmada. He was known for his charitable nature and deep devotion through penance.
One day, while the king was engaged in penance in the forest, a wild bear appeared from nowhere and began gnawing at his leg. Despite this, King Mandhata remained absorbed in his meditation. After some time, the bear dragged the king deeper into the forest by his leg.
Though terrified, the king restrained himself from reacting with anger or violence, remaining true to the path of righteousness. Instead, he fervently prayed to Lord Vishnu with deep devotion.
Hearing the king's heartfelt prayer, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu appeared and with His Sudarshan Chakra, killed the bear.
However, by then, the bear had already chewed off the king's leg, and the king was overwhelmed with sorrow. Seeing his grief, Lord Vishnu spoke:
“O dear one, do not grieve. Go to Mathura and observe the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi. Worship My Varaha (boar) incarnation. By the merit of this fast, your limbs will be restored and made whole again. The attack by the bear was a result of your past-life deeds.”
Obeying the Lord’s command, King Mandhata went to Mathura and faithfully observed the Varuthini Ekadashi fast. As a result, he soon regained his beautiful and complete body. Eventually, due to the power of this Ekadashi, King Mandhata ascended to heaven.
