Vedic astrology recognizes the North and South Lunar Nodes rather than planets since Rahu and Ketu are known as shadow planets. Rahu and Ketu exist only as cosmic points that mark the points where Sun and Moon paths cross each other. These celestial bodies control karma together with transformation and spiritual development thus providing essential guidance about personal destiny along with life obstacles.

The Story of Rahu and Ketu

Rahu and Ketu emerged through the celestial cosmic ocean churning known as Samudra Manthan. The cosmic churning between devas (gods) and asuras (demons) for amrita (nectar of immortality) led Lord Vishnu to appear as Mohini who dispersed the nectar only to devas according to the Puranas. During the distribution of nectar to the devas, Svarbhanu managed to blend with them by pretending to be one of them. Vishnu dispatched Svarbhanu's head using the Sudarshan Chakra discus when Surya and Chandra alerted him about the beer consumption.

Svarbhanu acquired some nectar before his decapitation because of which immortal life continued through his head and body but they remained separated. Accounting for the separation Rahu gained the status of celestial body while Ketu received the title of eclipses. Rahu and Ketu developed bitter enmity with the Sun and Moon and continue their eternal pursuit to occasionally swallow them as the legend indicates eclipses.

Significance in Astrology

Rahu’s Positive and Negative Influences

Positive: Rahu adopts positive traits for individuals whose placement in the chart is accurate by granting them fortitude together with originality and capability to surpass customary rules. Rahu leads to immediate increases in success coupled with general popularity and material advantages with its support of modern science and technical advancement.

Negative: An afflicted Rahu position in the chart causes confusion along with addiction to substances and anxiety symptoms and unethical behaviour and an excessive focus on material aspects of life. The influence of Rahu results in operative tendencies which also manifests as illusion or deception and continuous drive yet commonly ends in either failure or destroyed fulfilment.

Ketu’s Positive and Negative Influences

Positive: Ketu signifies inner strength because it represents spiritual understanding together with natural wisdom and freedom from worldly distractions. A potent Ketu placement grants people with wisdom and emotional stability and allows them to control mystical phenomena. The combination of self-reflection invites practitioners toward spiritual humility and drives them toward higher knowledge acquisition.

Negative: Ketu brings negative aspects into people's life when it appears in an undesirable position since it generates feelings of isolation and self-questioning together with unexpected financial losses and a pervasive lack of meaning. Even positive detachment can result in individuals ignoring or cutting ties with their obligations which may trigger them to become distant or attempt to flee reality.
